i've gone through my 100 pack spindle and not a single coaster. i find for the best results on any burn [CDR or DVDR] is to burn at slow speeds. sure it takes longer , but it's done right. no unreadable DVD's. i burned mine at 8x without any problems.

Sony DVP-FX930/R 9-Inch Portable DVD Player, Red Review

We had an old Insignia product that was not working well which we have since revived and a two hour road trip to Cape Cod. Therefore, I decided to look at what Amazon had to offer. After reading the reviews of many current and previous owners, this is the DVD player I chose to purchase. We have only used it twice thus far going to and from the Cape, however I have to say that the sound is superior as is the picture. My child in the third row of our minivan could both see and hear the movie from the console it was resting on between the front seats of the car. The swivel factor is also very helpful to adjust the picture when driving with sun as factor for screen visability. Thus far, I would give this machine an A+. How long it functions remains to be seen as we take great care of our equipment. We have used the Insignia for four years going back and forth to the Cape. Now we have two machines and can make everyone happy! I will say the Sony is far superior to the Insignia.

Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Glossy White Inkjet Printable Spindle Review

No problem with the product, but order it instead from B&H or some place else. USPS states that Amazon shipped this product 'bound printed material' rate, first of all it doesn't qualify for that rate, is the very slowest the USPS offers. CS at Amazon said that it was because I choose to use their Super Saver shipping. Okay, it shows it shipped a week ago from a town 75 minutes away from me and I still didn't have it. Amazon, never again.

Memorex DVD+R 16x 4.7GB 50 Pack Spindle Review

Don't bother trying to use these DVDs with a Mac, they won't work. I foolishly bought two spindles of blank Memorex media - CDs and DVDs - and not a single disc in either pack works. It's not my optical drive that's the problem, because other brands of media do work in my machine. So again, if you have a Mac, a Macbook, or a Macbook Pro, don't buy these discs - you'll just be throwing your money away. I've had very good luck with Sony products and will go back to using them exclusively.

1 out of every 2 discs actually burned successfully. That's 12 or so out of 25 discs and considering some took 30mins or longer to burn, the error rate wasted so much of my time. Definitely would not buy again.

Verbatim 95355 4.7 GB 8X UltraLife Gold Archival Grade DVD-R, 50-Disc Spindle Review

The reason you should be looking at these DVD blanks is to make archival storage discs. Regular DVD's, or really inexpensive ones, are reported to have a very short life after burning - even if you store them properly - even in the one or two year range. It's been reported that these Gold foil DVD blanks will last longer. There is also evidence that says the Taiyo Yuden blanks last a very good long time. The blanks do appear to be tougher than my usual Sony discs, but I didn't do any Brillo pad tests.
I purchased these Verbatim blanks to back up some irreplacable video files, which had been converted from VHS to DVD. What can be said about the 24 I burned, they burned beautifully, were extremely high contrast when you look at the business side of the disc, and play on every single DVD player we've ever thrown at these. There wasn't a single coaster burn in the set (my coaster rate using Sony DVD blanks is around 1 in 100). I've burned maybe 3 or 4,000 DVD's on every imaginable brand of DVD, and these are the sharpest looking burns I have ever seen.
On longevity, well that's almost impossible to comment on today. Verbatim says some incredible number of years. Nobody should ever believe that claim, dyes just cannot last that long. But they should be good until the next storage media arrives.
One sensitive point with DVD blanks is the reflective layer behind the dye layer. Most are aluminum, which if ever exposed to air, will tarnish and lose reflectivity rendering the disc useless (depending of course on the location of that tarnish). These Verbatim discs avoid that problem from ever happening, gold will not tarnish and lose it's reflectivity.
What a person really has to consider when they look at a digital archive strategy, is using multiple back up places. DVD's can fail over time, or become unreadable. I don't subscribe to the format nonsense or scare tactics many like to toss around about incompatible reading formats where drives to read a particular media will cease to exist. A person can still get 5 1/4 inch floppies converted to other formats (8.5 inch discs are almost impossible to convert now), and that size floppy has been gone for well over 10 years now (if you were asleep for 10 years you could still get that data off those floppies). In the case of these irreplaceable movie files, I chose to use these Verbatim discs. Made three copies of each DVD on Taiyo Yuden blanks for day to day viewing (they are lacquer based discs and are so optically flat that you can see all the way to the bottom of a 100 spindle through the center - they are also about 1/4 the price). I saved the Video_TS folders on two separate hard drives, one of which is only turned on to copy to or from for critical backups. And one day I will copy all these files up to a service like Mozy. I will then have 5 separate copies in three different physical locations. Ah most would say overkill, but these are important files. I'm following the exact same strategy for my 25,000 digital images.
These are without question excellent DVD blanks. In my experiece I've never seen a better blank for critical archival work. They are expensive, but they are cheaper on a per gigabyte basis than a hard drive. If they last 1/4 of the 100 years Verbatim claims, I'd be super happy. Just remember, hedge your bets with critical files - put them in multiple places on different media.

TDK16x DVD+R Lightscribe 30 Pack Spindle Review

Lighstcribe labeling is a great way to create beautiful images on your disks using your own photos and text. However, do not purchase this product if you want to see the best quality. I previously used Verbatim DVD media and my images printed very crisp and dark. Using the TDK media I lost a significant amount of contrast. If you want your images to look good, try a different brand.

TDK Electronics DVD-R14RGACB20 8CM Mini DVD-R 20 Pack Review

If you do a lot of home movies with a Mini DVD camcorder, as far as I'm concerned this product is the ONLY way to go to save on the cost of the Mini DVD's from the Big Boxes or even Wal-Mart! A 20 pack, at long record/play that's 20 hours of whatever you're taking on whatever trip you're on! Like the days of VHS, most people will never watch most of it again, but you can! If you have it! And don't forget the Mini DVD cases, also from Amazon and I reviewed the 25 pack of those I bought.

Memorex 30 min./1.4 GB Mini DVD-R (20-Pack) Review

I have used these (memeorex) the TDK and the Sony mini-dvd's. These work ok but seemed to be slightly off balance causing a slight vibration in the camcorder. Nothing was evident on the video. I am using a Sony camcorder so of course I get the annoying sony proprietary message about the media. The TDK's or the sony mini-dvd's did not cause the vibration.

Verbatim 96689 8.5GB 8X LightScribe DVD+R DL (10pk Spindle Box) Review

At first I was going to give this product one star, but I thought I would try something first. The Verbatim DVD+R DL lightscribe discs will NOT work on my Dual Layer lightscribe DVD drive on my computer. However, it will work on my Panasonic DVD dual layer home recorder. I must format the disc first. After that I can record and erase all I want. This leaves me to believe that the product is missing the all important 'W' I believe the box should read '8x DVD+RW DL w/Lightscribe. My Computer DVD recorder does not support DVD+RW DL. If it was just +R and not +RW then my panasonic DVD recorder would not be able to record and erase on the disc after the initial format. So because the discs do work on my home DVD recorder I gave this product three stars.

Sony DPR-47/50 Write-once DVD+R Disc - Spindle Review

I have a SONY DVD R/W burner (IDE\SONY DVD RW DW-G120A) in my Windows XP SP3 PC. I found out early that the type of media that this is certified to work with is a short list (I'm not happy about that!) Obviously, Sony branded DVD media was in the list to use with this burner. I've been using Sony DPR-47/50 Write-once DVD+R Disc - Spindles for a few years, and with very good results (I also use their Sony 50PK DVD-R 4.7GB 16X-SPINDLE media and have the same good results with those). I've made a few hundred video programs on these that I've distributed to others and the rate of complains coming back is low ("it wouldn't play in my DVD player" is rare). Some people have told me if there is a problem with them playing in the DVD Players that are attached to their TV systems, when they have tried them in their PCs they do work. I'm not sure that there is a 100% solution for this, for one retail home product that will work in all players, but these Sony Branded ones come close.

Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Datalifeplus Shiny Silver Hub Logo 50K Spindle Review

Really nice disks. Burn at up to 12x with no problems. Just plain well-made. There was no cases of layers ungluing, no loss of readablility. No coasters al all, by the way! And it is a record, considering the fact that I used several hundreds of them already. The recording layer is that metal-azo (This invention provides azo-metal complex dyes for a high-density optical disc recording medium that produces recordings with greater power margin and better sensitivity). (by Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM)) This media are manufactured utilizing Ultra-Precise Molding (UPM) technology which produces very flat discs, guaranteeing stable, high-speed rotation during the reading and writing processes.
So this is what you get for you money. Enjoy!

Memorex 4x DVD+RW 25-Pack Spindle Review

I have purchased several hundred Memorex DVD+RW discs in the past few years and while I have had an occasional coaster most of the discs worked quite well on the Samsung DVD recorders (two different models) that I have used. My recent order of two 25-disc spindles resulted in my receiving two spindles of Memorex DVD+RWs with a Memorex label that was not the same that has been used on previously received spindles (the label on the spindle was of a different design as was the imprinted design on each disc). The discs looked and felt different. I tried formatting 10 of these discs on both of the DVD recorders and neither of the recorders would work with the DVDs. The DVDs seem to be a completely different manufacture than the discs of the Memorex brand previously putchased. What can I say other than buyer beware. You can assume a certain quality from a brand name and then all of a sudden it is gone.

Maxell 16x 4.7 GB DVD-R Spindle (50 Discs) Review

I bought this several months ago to make some video DVDs and store all my important data, mostly photos, programs, and documents. The first time I used them, they worked fine, I did not experience any problems at all during burning and accessing files in the discs afterwards. Just recently I wanted to open all my data again but much to my anger and frustration, ALMOST ALL of the discs are inaccessible and all I got are error messages. Even those discs that are readable have either small to large chunk of data that cannot be read.
I have no idea these discs could deteriorate so quickly. I didn't even use them heavily. They're still perfectly smooth, I always used them gently and always put them back to the spindle and store them away. But apparently it didn't matter, and they just broke down on their own for no reason whatsoever. Now I've lost about 70% of the data I've burned to the discs and must spend countless hours again re-collecting my data from their original sources.
I thought Maxell is supposed to be one of the most trusted name in this media. I often used their brand even back to the days of 5.25 floppy disks, and they were quite satisfactory. I could not say the same with this DVD-R. Perhaps I was just being unfortunate, and you might have better luck with it, but for me, I will NEVER buy any Maxell brand again for the rest of my life. EVER.
So much for trying to save money and not buying an external hard drive. Sigh.

Memorex DVD-R 16x 4.7GB 25 Pack Spindle Review

It works in any machine I throw it in. Never had a problem or coaster. Great in my past & present stand alone recorders: Sony, Samsung, Ampex, Apex, Lite-on & Phillips.
Works in all my PCs, XP, Win98se & Linux. Good in my Plextor, Phillips, Sony, Acer, & HP drives too.
And the price is right.
Perhaps all these bad reviews from Mac users have something to do with their draconian DRM & not the disks. Or maybe you should be using a normal DVD drive like everybody else does.
I had a big fire at home last spring. Most of my disks were exposed to extreme heat, & later submerged under feet of dirty water for days. After cleaning well over 1,000 of them up, ALL the Memorex DVDs & CDs still played fine. All the blank disks still recorded too. Most of the other disks made by other brands did not work anymore.
I'm sold on memorex disks for durabilty, & reliability now.

Hewlett Packard 16X 100/pack 4.7GB DVD-R Review

Test HP DVD media by copying a video to the DVD from a PC to a TV DVD player (HP 100 Pack 16X DVD-R Spindle).
Highly recommend the HP DVD media both for use in a computer and for use in your DVD player connected to your TV. Note: My video product review is at expotv.com. (http://www.expotv.com/videos/reviews/7/77/HP-16X-DVD-R-Media/291413) Their search is not so great as Amazon's, so you may need to search by clicking - top right - "Community" - On the left search member: beta . And again, on the right select the member "beta" (with no numbers, no letters, just beta). That will bring up all beta video reviews, including the HP 100 Pack 16X DVD-R. (The review shows writing a little movie excerpt to the HP DVD using a PC DVD writer and playing the DVD back on the regular DVD player connected to a TV).
The individual DVDS are very colorful - a rose color - very bright and cheery. They are easy to label even using a felt tip marker. The size 4.7 GB is nice, the 16x seemed plenty fast, and there were no problems at all in copying a video (a camera product review short rafting trip) to the DVD and then playing it in the DVD player and viewing the video on the TV. Everything went smoothly. The price was great!
Please watch the review for more info. Highly recommend.
Pros: Great price for 100 DVDS!, DVD worked immediately on first test., Super color.
Cons: Spindle packaging as it appears the bottom could fall off. But so far not!

Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (25pk Spindle) Review

Working with three different burning programs, one of which is the current Nero Burning Rom (9.4.13.2), on a brand new Sony Dual Layer DVD-Burner (purchased at CompUSA) as well as a rather reliable NEC burner (Both with entirely current firmware), with every resident process killed, My internet disabled and using disks from two different stacks from two different manufactures...
(I didn't choose to get Memorex again. I merely had no choice when trying to exchange the media at a local CompUSA as the store only carried Memorex DL's and they would not refund the money. Their return policy is not to refund money on opened blank media, even though to see if the media is defective, you have to open it.)
...the ratio was 2 to 3 coasters created for every successful burn. Losing the possibility of my system being the problem, it must be the media itself. Do not buy these unless you're looking for a way to make expensive yet pretty Coasters. And if you must, do not buy it from CompUSA.

Memorex CD/DVD Sleeves Paper with Window Cut-Out & Back Flap (50-Pack) Review

I had previously purchased this same model unit and when it became full was glad to find I could order an identical unit to store the accumulating discs. The first unit was excellent quality, but the drawers stuck in the second unit, requiring slaming of drawers shut while holding cabinet to get them fully closed. I tried the drawers from the original cabinet in new case and had same problem; new drawers worked fine in old cabinet. All 4 drawers bound on the upper right corner, so I suspect cabinet is slightly twisted, but there was no sign of damage to the shipping boxes - two boxes over unit. I decided to just live with the problem rather than attemmpt an exchange.
The unit iis well made, attractive, and each drawer has a key lock. It would have been nicer if the units were configured for stacking as the top unit will slide on bottom.

Verbatim Shiny Silver DataLife Plus 8x DVD-R Spindle, 50 Discs Review

Out of a 50-spindle, I found five dead-on-arrival (DOA). My writing software quickly rejected them with an error message after a few seconds of burning. I found that if my writing software detected the blanks as "2x, 4x" or "2x, 4x, 6x" media, then I would have a greater chance of a coaster. Sometimes ejecting and reinserting the blank would cause the software to detect it correctly as "2x, 4x, 6x, 8x" media. All of the DOA's were toward the bottom of the spindle.
A few others that were successfully burnt and tested, became flaky after several months. My DVD player would refuse to play them initially. After a couple eject and reinsert cycles, the burned DVD would eventually play. It's not my player that's causing the trouble; inserting a pressed retail DVD would always spin up correctly.
I notice that unlike the Verbatim branded products, these lack a "Limited Lifetime Warranty" in the product description. Also, while the Verbatim branded products are at 16x, these have an "Up to 8x" disclaimer on the package label. It certainly looks like these disks are the ones that failed 16x quality control and then re-packed as a separate product line.

a lot of blank DVD media will occasionally have a disc or two that may not format correctly or even if it does will not play in some

Memorex DVD-R 16x 4.7GB 100 Pack Spindle Printable Review

This is one of the several brands I find reliable for DVD-Rs. I barely find a coaster on the Memorex DVD-R's. It is as par as with the Maxells, Verbatim, Sony's and TDKs that I have used before. Try to stay away from unknown brands that is kind of a hit or miss.
This is the best way if you want to print your own titles and graphics. I use an old Epson R200 with a CD/DVD printer carriage. Using in combination with Paint Shop Pro editor, it works perfect. I stopped doing the stamp sticker label as it gives me problems with air bubbles and seems to make the DVD heavier to spin.
The thing with DVD's or CD's is that when you find a bad one, it seems to be bunched into the same stack as they were manufactured at the same place and at the same time. My recommendation is not to burn DVDs or CDs using the maximum speed, the chance of a bad burn tend to be much much less if you use the next slower speed indicated on the media. Same as filling up the data capacity, 4200mb seems to work best for me as filling up the DVD to the edge may become problematic.

Memorex DVD+R 16x 4.7GB 100 Pack Spindle Review

I have used inexpensive DVDs for years (many more inexpensive than these) and some Memorex as well and never had a major problem. I ignored the negative reviews and decided to try these anyway since it was a known and previously used (and somewhat respected) name brand. The gamble didn't pay off. These are CHEAP (not just inexpensive)!! Over 50% failure rate (tested at multiple burning speeds). I have never experienced more then 5% failure rate in the past. These DVDs are literally 10 times worse than the cheapest, worst DVDs I have ever used in my life. These are very bad. Just thought I'd put it out there as someone who has used Memorex in the past and thought these would be fine. They are not.
Complete garbage.

Memorex 4.7Gb/16x DVD-R (50-Pack Spindle) Review

I am truly amazed at how horrible these discs have been. No exaggeration, about 50% of them don't work. I have a brand new HP laptop and Memorex discs are the only ones I have this much trouble with. I would strongly recommend a higher quality disc. As inexpensive as these are, you'll save money in the long run.

Verbatim 95310 8.5 GB 2.4X Dual-Layer DVD+R, 20-Disc Spindle Review

I have bought and gone through two spindles of dl Verbatim discs now from this page this year. Both were manufactured in Singapore.
I have not had one coaster yet. I burn all of my discs on my 3 year old laptop OEM DL burner using IMGBurn and have had great success, despite my girlfriend sometimes opening firefox in the background. Though I try not to have anything else running while I burn a disc.
To burn one of these Verbatim discs it takes about 45min for me at 2.4x. Which isn't bad since my burner takes about 25 min to burn a single layer dvd at max speed.
I have not had any problems yet and will update if a future shipment of these discs don't work as well.

MAXELL 50-Pack DVD+R Recordable DVD (16X) Review

It took 3 weeks for this item to ship. And then almost a week for it to arrive once it was shipped. The box was 4 times the size of the spindle, and the only protective packaging was a air cushion thing on the side. This left 75% of the container unprotected and when I received it the case was broken. Dics are okay, but would be nice to have something to hold them in now.

Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16X Branded 50pk Spindle Review

These are about the best DVD-R disks on the market. The absolute best used to be made by Kodak and were true archival quality and backed by a 100 year guarantee. However when Kodak stopped making them I looked for a quality replacement and settled on Verbatim. I use these to make high quality back ups of family video as well as hard copies of all of my photos. Even with 3 digital backups on external drives, I just feel better having a physical copy as well.
They also burn excellent copies of DVDs if you want to make back ups of your disks--which I recommend since it is legal to make 'personal use' backups according to fair use law--and I hate losing a a DVD because it got scratched.
Overall DVD-R disks are a very inexpensive and quality data back up solution if you like the peace of mind of having physical copies of your video, photos, or other important files. Verbatim makes quality media, so you can't go wrong with these.

Memorex 16X DVD-R (100-Pack Spindle) Review

Through a longish period of time I've bought several Memorex DVD-R spindles of blank discs (B0009MX5R4). They've got less and less reliable. In my most recent spindle, there have been too many duds. Trying to record something from TV, they either didn't record or were unreadable on my DVD recorder or on my DVD player. It's been happening so often I won't buy this product any more.
